Start date & duration of the award: 2016/17 academic year for one year full-time or two years part-time (scholarship awarded pro-rata)
Person Specification
Home, EU and non-EU international students are eligible to apply. To be considered for a scholarship you must:
- Hold an offer of admission on one of the eligible programmes listed above
- Have native or near native proficiency in the language you intend to study
- If your first language is not English you need IELTS 7.0, with a minimum sub-score of 6.5 in written English and a minimum of 6.0 in all other sub skills, or equivalent.
- Candidates should intend to progress to doctoral studies at Newcastle University
Project Description
Scholarships are available to outstanding applicants who are considering a future career in research in one of the following areas:
Chinese Studies
Film Studies
French Studies
German Studies
Portuguese
Spanish
Latin American Studies
Japanese Studies
Linguistics
Translation and Interpreting.

Each Scholarship includes the UK/EU rate of tuition fee and £10,000 living expenses.

Applications will only be considered from candidates who hold an offer of a place on one of the MLitt programmes listed above. You must first apply via the University Postgraduate Application Portal by 20 May 2016.
Applications for the MLitt Scholarships must be submitted by email with the subject line: SML MLitt 2016
Your application should include the following:
1. A letter of application of no more than one side of A4, stating the reference number for your MLitt application and outlining the following:
- Your reasons for choosing Newcastle University
- Your motivation for MLitt study
- Your future plans, including how this could lead to doctoral study
- Any additional experience you wish to highlight
2. A research proposal of no more than 1000 words, including the following:
- Why you are applying to Newcastle
- Your central research question
- How your proposed topic fits into the research context
- Your proposed theoretical framework and/or methodology
3. A CV of no more than two sides of A4 including the following:
- Education and qualifications
- Relevant professional, academic or other experience
- Languages
- The names and addresses of two referees
