You should hold, or expect to achieve a 2:1 honours degree or international equivalent, in music or a closely related discipline.
International students: If your first language is not English you need IELTS 6.5 (with 6.5 in writing), or equivalent.
Overview
As one of the UK’s larger music departments, the International Centre for Music Studies at Newcastle University sustains a distinctive and plural research culture. We are seeking candidates of the highest calibre in any of our areas of research strength which include:
- Early music
- Ethnomusicology and traditional musics
- Critical and cultural musicology
- Composition (broadly defined), and performance

All relevant fields should be completed, but fields marked with a red
asterisk must to be completed. The following information will help us to
process your application. You will need to:
- insert the programme code 5811F (full-time MMus) or 5811P (part-time MMus) in the programme of study section
- select ‘Master of Music’ as the programme of study
- insert the scholarship code SAC18 in the studentship/partnership reference field
- clearly indicate on your proposal that you are applying for the Whitaker MMus Scholarship (SAC18).
Shortlisted applicants will be notified in May and invited for interview in June.
