School of Civil and Building Engineering
Loughborough University
Applications are invited for a PhD studentship funded by Loughborough University to start in October 2016. The research will be based at the Water, Engineering and Development Centre (WEDC) within the School of Civil and Building Engineering, with co-supervision from the Centre for Global Health and Human Development within the School of Sport, Exercise and Health Sciences.
The studentship is one of three on the theme of ‘Female health and wellbeing in rapidly urbanising environments’. These form part of an exciting new research initiative supported by Loughborough University’s ‘Health and Wellbeing Challenge’ which is bringing together expertise from across three schools within the University – the School of Social, Political and Geographical Sciences, the School of Sport, Exercise and Health Sciences, and the School of Civil and Building Engineering. The aim of these studentships is to conduct interdisciplinary research on the linkages between changing lifestyles, infrastructure and health, associated with rapid urbanization in the context of Ghana.
The studentship based in WEDC will explore the water, sanitation and hygiene (WASH) needs of women in relation to child care. More specifically, the research will focus on the decisions made by women living in urban Ghana about their WASH needs, as they seek to create a safe household environment and ensure good nutrition for young children within their care. An extended period of time will be spent conducting fieldwork in urban Ghana.
A stipend of £14,296 per annum plus tuition fees at the UK/EU rate is provided for up to three years. International (non EU) students may apply but will need to find the difference in fees between those for a ‘UK/EU’ and ‘international’ student themselves.
Students will normally need to hold, or expect to gain, at least a 2:1 degree (or equivalent) in a relevant discipline in engineering, environmental, health or developmental sciences. A Master’s degree and/or experience in one or more of these areas will also be an advantage. Applicants are invited to include a 1-2 page outline proposal with their application.
