Part Funded MSc by Research Studentship: Investigating the Presence of a Maturational Threshold in Training-Induced Responses in Collaboration with Swansea City Football Club, Hockey Wales and Welsh Rowing

Department of Sports and Exercise Science

Swansea University

Closing date: 29 April 2016

It is widely accepted that, relative to size, Wales is a highly successful sporting nation. However, as identified in the recent Sports Wales Vision, this is not enough and we need to continue to develop our knowledge and ability to optimally utilise our resources and to nurture our native talent. Central to this aim is improving our understanding of the influence of sport and exercise on children as they grow and mature. Questions as fundamental as i) are children trainable; ii) are there optimum windows of trainability during childhood and adolescence and iii) is it advantageous to obtain physiological adaptations to training earlier rather than later in a person’s sporting career, remain to be resolved. The resolution of these questions requires a large longitudinal dataset, which is not presently available.
Therefore, the purpose of this application is to secure the funding to support the establishment of a long-term athlete monitoring program in collaboration with Swansea City Football Club, Welsh Rowing and Hockey Wales that would generate this dataset. This project is thus not only highly novel but also has the potential for significant impact as the results will be directly applicable to the revision and optimisation of long term athlete development plans for the identification and fostering of talent.
The successful candidate will be supervised by Dr Melitta McNarry, and based within the state of the art facilities of the Department of Sports and Exercise Science, situated in Swansea University's Bay Campus.
The successful candidate will be expected to start their studentship in October 2016.
