PhD Studentship – Building inclusive nations in the age of migration

Department of Geography

Loughborough University

Applications are invited for a PhD studentship funded by the Loughborough University Graduate School in conjunction with the University’s Communication, Culture and Citizenship Research Challenge to start in October 2016. The project will be based in the Department of Geography at Loughborough University and work closely with the Department of Social Sciences.
Internationally renowned for its research excellence, the University has a vibrant research student community of around 1200 students supported by an £8 million annual investment. In the most recent Research Excellence Framework (REF) every department was found to be undertaking research that is internationally recognised, with many regarded as ‘world leading’. Comfortably ranked in the top 20 of all major university league tables, the University was awarded The Sunday Times University of the Year 2008-2009 and was voted The Times Higher Education ‘Best Student Experience’ in England for six years running.
This project will analyse the impact of international migration on the reproduction of ‘the national’, understood both as a discursive resource activated in processes of identity-formation and as a spatial context for mundane practices. More specifically, the studentship will explore when, where, and how the national enters and shapes the institutional management of diversity and everyday interactions within one or more chosen social settings (for instance, education, sports, family life, the media etc.) either in the UK or elsewhere in Europe. The choice of the social and geographical setting is deliberately left open, and can be adapted to the specific interests, disciplinary background and regional specialisation of the successful candidate.
The studentship is for three years and is intended to start in October 2016. The studentship provides a stipend of £14,057 per annum (current 15/16 rate) plus tuition fees at the UK/EU rate for up to three years. International (non EU) students may apply but will need to find the difference in fees between those for a ‘UK/EU’ and ‘international’ student themselves.
Students will normally need to hold, or expect to gain, at least a 2:1 degree (or equivalent) in a relevant social science discipline such as sociology, geography, anthropology, political science and communication and media studies. Whilst not essential, a relevant Master’s degree will be an advantage.
