PhD Student Netherlands Cancer Institute - Radiomics and Quantitative Imaging

The Netherlands Cancer Institute (NKI) have a vacancy for an excellent PhD student with a Master of Science in: (Biomedical) Engineering, Physics, Bioinformatics, Artificial Intelligence, Machine Learning, Computer Science, or related subject, with an interest in advanced image analysis and/or bioinformatics.

The position is embedded within the Radiology department at The Netherlands Cancer Institute (NKI) with an academic appointment at Maastricht University, The Netherlands. Its mission is to quantitatively extract features from imaging data sets (MRI, PET/CT, 4D-CT, MRI) to assess the correspondence with e.g. gene-expression, survival and other outcome measures of patients. A combination of automated and manual image characterization methods will be used to characterize these quantitative imaging biomarkers, using a so-called “radiomics” approach. You will develop and evaluate novel computational imaging processing methods applied to existing and future datasets from throughout Europe and the States. You will collaborate with world leading experts in the fields of imaging, image analysis, bioinformatics, computational biology, machine learning, and artificial intelligence.
This PhD project is in collaboration with Dana-Farber Cancer Institute (Harvard University).

Desired skills and experience

We are looking for a candidate who has completed (or almost completed) a Master in Science (or equivalent) degree in (Biomedical) Engineering, Physics, Bioinformatics, Artificial Intelligence, Machine Learning, Computer Science, or related subject. No prior experience in medicine is required. Significant programming experience is a must, experience with imaging analysis (CT, MRI, PET) and/or experience in bioinformatics/genomics would be valued highly. The candidate should also have good interpersonal skills and proven English writing skills. No need to master Dutch language. About the employer

The employment will be for a period of 4 years. The gross salary per month will be € 2.529,- to € 3.115,- according to the PhD (OIO) scales, and depends on previous experience. The terms of employment will be in accordance with the Collective Labour Agreement for Hospitals. In addition, a fixed end-of-year bonus is part of the secondary conditions.
