PhD Student - Bioengineering

Dr. Fakhrul Ahsan’s laboratory at Texas Tech University Health Sciences Center (TTUHSC) School of Pharmacy in Amarillo, Texas, has an opening for a doctoral student. Dr. Ahsan’s research interest is in pharmaceutics and inhalational drug delivery; he is now expanding his research program toward tissue-engineering of the lungs. This candidate is expected to work on a project that will have both drug-delivery and tissue-engineering components.

Desired skills and experience

An ideal candidate should have a Master of Science degree in Tissue or Biomedical Engineering with hands-on experience in hydrogel, electrospinning, polymeric scaffold, and stem cell culture.
The applicant should have a GPA of 3.5 or above in both a Bachelor and a Master Degree, and must take the Graduate Record Examination (GRE: www.ets.org/gre).  International applicants (whose Bachelor degree is not from a United States college or university or country where English is not the native language) must have a TOEFL (http://www.ets.org/toefl) score of 79, or an IELTS (http://www.ielts.org) of 6.5. The requirements of the GRE and TOEFL/IELTS are non-negotiable.
The admitted student will receive an annual stipend of $25,000 for the entire stay in the program, along with tuition waivers.

The university is well known for its commitment to training both US and international students. The doctoral study in Dr. Ahsan’s lab is a four- to five-year program that involves two years of coursework plus two to three years of research work.   Pharmaceutical scientists with a Ph.D. have outstanding career opportunities in pharmaceutical industries, academia, the United States Food and Drug Administration (FDA), and research institutes; the average annual salary of a newly conferred Ph.D. in Pharmaceutical Sciences is about $85,000, or above.
